WATER EXTRACTION: FAQ’S
It’s scary when water is in your home. We’ve provided you with all the information you need to know if you’re experiencing a water emergency.
Read the sections below or feel free to give us a call. We’ll answer any questions you might have about the water extraction process, insurance, and more.
What To Do If Water Is Leaking In Or Flooding Your Home
The very first thing you need to do is call a professional water removal company near you.
Yes, anybody can handle a small leak on their own. However, if water is consistently leaking in your home or if you’re suffering from a flood, you need to act fast.
The longer your property remains wet, the more damage and mold can take hold, which is why water extraction should happen as soon as possible.
While you’re waiting for the professionals to arrive, follow these steps to minimize the water damage to your home or business.
Step 1: Turn off the Water Supply
Go to your home or commercial property’s main water supply valve and shut it off. Don’t know where to find it? For properties built on concrete slabs, the main water supply valve is usually located on top of or beneath the water heater.
For properties built with basements or crawl spaces, the valve is usually located on a wall along the front of your house.
Step 2: Shut Off Electricity (If There’s Standing Water)
If your house is flooding or if there is water above any electrical outlets, turn off the electricity to your home.
Step 3: Open the Windows
Open the windows to begin the drying process. This will help prevent mold growth and mildew odors.
Step 4: Document the Damages
You need to document the damage BEFORE any major water extraction or water damage repairs efforts are made. If you do this before contacting your insurance company, you may not be compensated.
Quickly take photos of the location of the water damage, the source, and any building materials or personal belongings that were affected. This will help you maximize your insurance claim.
Step 5: Start Removing the Water On Your Own
Grab a mop, bucket, and towels, and try sopping up as much water as you can. If the water came from a contaminated source (i.e. a toilet overflow), please wait for a professional sewage cleanup company to do this.
Step 6: Remove Dry Items
Remove dry furniture or valuables to an unaffected area inside or outside of the home.

Will Insurance Cover Water Extraction?
For the most part, yes. Most standard homeowners insurance policies cover water damage resulting from “sudden and accidental” causes. This means insurers will cover the costs, if, for example, a water pipe breaks and you need water extraction or wood floor water damage repair.
Essentially, you’re covered unless the insurance company can prove the water damage resulted from a lack of proper home maintenance.
If you need any help with the water damage restoration insurance process, call us now. As a restoration company, we deal with insurance agents all the time so we know how to get the most compensation out of your losses.
WATER EXTRACTION & REMOVAL FAQS
The Average Cost of Water Removal
Because no two water damage projects are alike, unfortunately, there is no fixed cost for water removal, drying, or repairs.
For water extraction services alone, you can expect to pay around $1,000 – $5,000. These services include extracting water, drying and sanitizing the affected areas, and removing materials as needed.
Again, that’s just a rough estimate. The costs can be lower or higher than that depending on a variety of factors, like if mold is present or if building materials like drywall need to be repaired.
To help you understand the costs, we’ve put together a list of factors that water extraction companies use to determine the pricing.
Cost Factor #1: Level of Contaminants
Water removal companies classify water by the level of contaminants it contains:
Clean water: This water poses no threat and usually comes from a leaking or broken pipe. The average cost for this is $3.75 per square foot.
Grey water: This water contains bacteria or chemical contaminants and usually comes from appliances or toilet overflows containing urine. Cleanup costs for this range around $4.50 per square foot.
Black water: This source of water is highly unsanitary and is the most costly to remove as it involves special training and equipment. Costs for this are around $7 per square foot.
Cost Factor #2: Amount of Water
Most water extraction companies use the height of the water and the square footage of the affected area as a base. For example, extracting a few inches of water that were contained in one room is cheaper than cleaning an overflow that spread to the entire house.
Cost Factor #3: Extent of the Damage
The more damage your property takes on, the higher the cost. For example, providing flooded carpet drying services is much less expensive than repairing a ceiling that’s showing signs of water damage and mold, as it requires less time and effort.
Cost Factor #4: Type of Repair Materials
The type the building materials required for water damage repairs will guide the cost. For instance, if you need custom cherry wood cabinets replaced, the repair cost will be significantly higher than if you were using basic materials.
